Enhancing participation, representation and accountability in Myanmar’s political transition
Together with the three Danish political parties, the Green Left, the Social Democratic Party and the Liberal Party, the DIPD Country Office in Myanmar cooperates with the political parties of Myanmar to support the democratic transition.
The partnership focuses on strengthening the dialogue between parties, building the capacity, and promoting inclusivity of women and youth within the political parties.
To strengthen the role of political parties, DIPD has organized multi-party dialogues for representatives of parliamentary political parties to support them in promoting their political interests in the political dialogue. The aim is political parties, through dialogue, recognize the importance of promoting their political positions in the democratic reform process. It is also an opportunity to build a culture and practice of multi-party dialogue between parties across the political spectrum. Further, DIPD supports youth and women participation with potential for political leadership and target their party leadership with messages for advocacy.
Multiparty dialogue
Through the DIPD partnership political parties have engaged in multiparty dialogues with each other, and with other key stakeholders in the political transition process, including the Election Commission, the media, and civil society. The dialogue platforms allow the parties and other stakeholders to build consensus on contentious issues within the democratisation process and create a strong and fair framework for elections.
Inclusion of women and youth
To enhance the role of women and youth in politics, DIPD has used a cocktail of approaches, including advocacy meetings targeting party leadership; capacity development of women party leaders and members; multiparty networking forums; reforming party policies and procedures; and initiating mentoring programs.
Some of out results
One of the success stories is that several young people will be nominated as candidates for the 2020 election while others have been permanently employed by the parliamentary support offices of their party.
DIPD established dialogues between Facebook and political parties on technical and political challenges related to social media campaigns. The party representatives involved are now aware of Facebook’s Community Standards, reporting mechanisms for hate speech and misinformation.
