Palestine

Palestine is facing challenges in establishing a healthy democracy.

DIPD is no longer active in this country; therefore, this page is no longer updated.

The overarching frame of Palestinian politics is the Israeli occupation and expansion, which has created a situation where the establishment of a healthy democracy faces serious challenges. The political and democratic culture in Palestine is characterized by nepotism and corruption, and the Palestinian people's attitude to politics and politicians may be summarized as a profound distrust and resignation. Few of the many political parties’ present in Palestine have been able to provide a viable alternative to the two dominant political parties, Fatah and Hamas.

Despite the challenges various political forces persist in trying to promote democratization through institutional reform as well as the enhancement of democratic culture.
