Female politicians in Burkina Faso involve their husbands for equal representation in politics
A network for husbands of politically active women has given the men a new understanding of the challenges, their wives face in everyday life.
The Centre for Democratic Governance in Burkina Faso is at the forefront of changing culture and beliefs which hinder women’s participation in politics.
One of the most successful initiatives is the creation of a network for husbands whose wives are involved in politics. The idea is for the husbands to better support their wives.
It all started with a meeting where politically active women got a platform to share with their husbands the challenges they face in their everyday life, juggling the expectations of a housewife and a political career.
The meeting and subsequent establishment of the network is a consequence of the increased focus on how having a husband and children is often an obstacle to a woman's participation in politics.
Both the politically active women and their husbands appreciate the increased involvement of the men, which kickstarts their interest and support for their wives.
Broadcasts against prejudices
As another weapon in the fight against gender-specific prejudices. The Centre for Democratic Governance in Burkina Faso has also supported radio and tv discussions. The broadcasts were in five different languages: English, Mooré, Dioula, Accompludé, Gourmatchéma. Their purpose was to awaken the interest of the listeners and to highlight various issues related to women's political participation.
