A new and democratic green left in Ukraine
The Danish Red-Green Alliance and The Alternative have partnered with the Ukrainian organisation “Social Movement” with the long-term aim of forming a new and democratic green leftist party.
Danish partner: The Red-Green Alliance, The Alternative
Local partner: Sotsialnyi Rukh (Social Movement)
Project start: 2023
The purpose of the partnership between the Danish Red-Green Alliance, The Alternative, and the Ukrainian organisation, Social Movement (SM), is to support coalition building and increased trust among the involved groups (unionists, leftists, feminists, and eco-activists) while aiming to facilitate a larger eco-social political movement.
The lead partner in Ukraine is the Social Movement (SM) – an NGO established in 2015 with an existing base of trade unionists, feminists, and eco-activists as its core members. With the start of the full-scale invasion and after the initial war shock, the organisation has been active in civil society initiatives such as the reintegration of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and other war victims in the political process, aiming to give them a voice from below. While working closely with labour groups and feminist groups, the SM has increasingly focused on the green transformation of Ukraine, starting out with the energy sector.
The project builds on the results of another DIPD initiative with the SM from June 2023 - June 2024, led by the Red-Green Alliance. The new and joint Alternative/Red-Green project is to expand from the original SM base and practice outreach to other leftist and green groups in Ukraine in order to facilitate a broader and inclusive social movement from below that both engages activists and formulates and communicates political solutions.
