The Danish Social-Liberal Party and Tanzania’s Civic United Front
The Danish political party, the Social-Liberals (Radikale Venstre), has entered into a partnership with one of Tanzania’s main opposition parties, the Civic United Front (CUF). The project seeks to strengthen the capacity of CUF with a particular focus on improving policy development and organisation at local level.
The partnership between the Social-Liberal Party and CUF strengthens DIPD’s presence in Tanzania, which already includes a partnership with the multiparty platform, Tanzania Centre for Democracy.
About the Partnership
Through a focus on the local party organisation of CUF, the project seeks to improve the development of a local policy agenda, strengthen the party organisation and culture of democracy at local level, and finally improve the local electoral cycle management.
The projects sets out with an inception phase, where the project will be developed in greater detail, though is expected to revolve around activities as local Town Hall meetings in selected districts, where party members, civil society representatives and general opinion makers will discuss different political issues. Seminars on organisation, recruiting of members and communication is also intended to be part of the collaboration.
The Civic United Front
CUF was founded in 1992 after the alteration of the Tanzanian constitution to allow for a multiparty system. The party has since established itself as one of the largest parties in Tanzania, and a key opposition force to ruling Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM). CUF is especially strong on the semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar and has since 2010 been part of a coalition government, the Government of National Unity. CUF is, however, active in close to all of the 136 districts in Tanzania, and actively trying to strengthen its presence on mainland Tanzania.
The Social Liberal Party – Radikale Venstre
The Social-Liberal Party (Radikale Venstre) is situated at the centre of the Danish political spectrum, and has historically collaborated with both the left and right wing parties in parliament. Following the Danish parliamentary election in 2011, the party formed a government coalition with the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) and Socialist People’s Party (Socialistisk Folkeparti). Internationally, the Social-Liberal party is an active member of the European Liberal organisation, the European Liberal Democrats (ELDR), and the world federation of liberal political parties, Liberal International, where also CUF is a member.
