Centre for Research Initiatives

Introduced in 2008, democracy is new to the small kingdom of Bhutan. To help foster accountability of the political parties for the policies and bills introduced,  DIPD supports a  research project by the Center for Research Initiatives in Thimphu. To strengthen dialogue on democracy in Bhutan, the Center will analyse and publish a book on a selection of  bills passed by the first democratic government in Bhutan as well as people’s awareness on and satisfaction with democracy.

About the Project

The research project entitled ‘perfomance of the ruling government and the opposition party’ seeks to strengthen accountability of the political parties and discussions of democracy in Bhutan through:

  • Public policy analysis of a selection of policies and bills passed by the first elected government since democracy was introduced in 2008
  •  Study of people’s awareness of- and satisfaction with democracy

Results will be published in a book as input to discussions on democracy in Bhutan. The project was approved by the DIPD Board in March 2012 and is set to run from May to December 2012.

Centre for Research Initiatives

The Center for Research Initiatives (CRI) in Thimphu seeks to support the democratic culture in Bhutan through research and policy analysis. CRI has previously documented and published a book on Bhutan’s first democratic election in 2008, “Drukyul decides: in the minds of Bhutan’s first voters”.

In 2012-2013, CRI will work exclusively on documenting Bhutan’s second democratic election in 2013 with the support of DANIDA, Thimphu, and DIPD.
